The words had barely left Darien Fawkes' mouth when the burning scaffolding above him collapsed. He dived out of the way, quicksilvering as he did so. The quicksilver spared him from the searing heat, but it didn't protect him from the less-than-graceful landing. Coughing and shedding quicksilver, Darien scrambled to his feet, covering his nose and mouth with a rag. The flaming debris rained down upon the spot he'd been standing, blocking his only exit. Great. Now he was trapped in here too. He had the foresight to go invisible again before resuming the search. Not that he was trying to hide from anyone, but the quicksilver would shield him from becoming extra crispy before he could find his partner. Unfortunately, it couldn't block the smoke from his lungs. "Hobbes!" Darien shouted, pulling the cloth away to do so and instantly regretting it as he started coughing. "Damn it, where are you?" There was no answer from the haze around him. Darien flattened himself against a concrete wall, as far as he could possibly get from the flames. Shaking the quicksilver off, he took stock of the situation. The stairwell was blocked by so much crap that he wouldn't be able to dig through it in time. He glanced at his tattoo. Only three segments of the snake were still green. It wasn't critical, but he had to conserve his quicksilver. A crunching noise from above reminded him that he didn't have a lot of time to think. To his right was the blocked-off exit. To his left there was an entrance to the next room, but it was almost completely blocked off by fire. He thought he heard voices then, coming from past the wall of flame; too high-pitched to be Hobbes. It sounded female, anxious, trapped somewhere in the warehouse. Suddenly determined, Darien turned and leapt through the flames, quicksilvering before he went through. He crashed through a few timbers as he did so, but they were so charred that they did nothing to slow his trajectory. Landing on his feet for a change, he squinted, trying to make out the shapes moving in the smoke. ***** There was a cracking sound, and Ami turned. A section of the flames seemed to part for a second, and the broken table beneath them shattered outward. She covered her eyes to ward off the ash that drifted towards them, and heard a thud. When she could see clearly again, there was no one there. "What was that?" Adam didn't reply. He was too busy focusing on the unconscious man beside him, trying to heal some of the cuts and burns. Keeping the cloth pressed to her face, Ami looked around wildly, trying to figure out what had just happened. She switched to telepathy to avoid breathing in the smoke. ~Adam?~ Still no answer. She tried again, this time with a bit more force. ~Adam!~ ~What?~ He looked up, a bit dazed; Ami couldn't tell if it was from the smoke or the effort he'd been putting into healing. She stood up, moving hesitantly in the direction of the sound. ~There's someone here!~ The Australian peered through the smoke. ~I don't see anyone.~ He paused, eyes widening as he picked up on what she'd been sensing. ~I thought Jade and Megabyte got everyone else out.~ ~Well, we've got to find them,~ Ami decided. ~Fine. I'll go look.~ Adam stood up. ~You get him out of here.~ ~Not alone, you're not!~ Whenever Adam went off alone somewhere, he usually risked getting knocked out or blown up or sent to another dimension. ~Not with your track record.~ ~Ami, we can't leave him here in this condition!~ Rolling her eyes, Ami was about to do the obvious and call Megabyte when their patient stirred, coughing loudly and squinting at something in the smoke. She followed his gaze, and realized that there was something there, what looked like a patch where the smoke wasn't quite as thick. Like an outline of empty space. "Fawkes?" the man coughed. "That you?" Before Ami or Adam could react, another chunk of the ceiling decided to fall - the chunk directly above Ami's head. Ami didn't teleport. She didn't have to. "LOOK OUT!" Something heavy slammed into her, lifting her off her feet and sending her flying backwards - and seemingly disappearing as she did so. A second later, Ami hit the ground, reappearing upon impact, the nothingness seeming to fall off of her. What really surprised Adam was that a dark-haired man appeared as well, ostensibly having tackled Ami to get her out of harm's way. The man scooted back, allowing Ami to sit up. As Adam stared, Ami couldn't resist a small smirk. ~I told you there was someone else here!~ Beside him, the man they'd saved sat up, still coughing. "About time you got here, my friend," he gasped. The other man's appearance didn't faze him in the least. Fawkes opened his mouth to respond, but his reply was drowned out by a cacophony of sound - the splintering of wood, the grinding of metal, and the groan of a foundation about to fold in on itself. Bits of plaster and wood - at least, that's what Ami thought it was - rained down upon them. The framework was coming apart, and there was no way that they would get out in time. Which meant there was only one option left. [This one just kind of fizzled out, although there wasn't much left to go. Basically, Ami and Adam teleport the other two out, both Gen. Damon and the Official want to know what the hell happened, and both sides insist they didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I really don't recall what the punchline of this fic was, so picking it up again now wouldn't work. --Mandi]
